Buying guide: Technical specifications to look out for when making a purchase

To ensure the image on the projection screen later meets your expectations exactly, three factors are particularly important: sharpness, brightness and projection technology.

Projector resolution: Full HD or 4K

Icon Full HD

Full HD

The solid entry-level standard. Full HD delivers a sharp picture that is perfectly adequate for normal television viewing, most DVDs and Blu-rays, and the occasional bit of gaming.
Icon 4K UHD

4K UHD

If you want a genuine cinema experience and are planning screen sizes of 100 inches or more, 4K is the best choice. The picture is four times sharper than Full HD. Pixel structures are no longer visible, even when sitting close to the screen. Perfect for modern films, streaming in the highest quality and next-gen gaming.

Brightness depending on the area of application

Dedicated home cinema

Projectors with a brightness of up to 2.000 lumens are suitable for darkened rooms or dedicated home cinemas where there is little or no ambient light. These projectors offer balanced picture quality and an immersive cinema experience.

Living room with ambient light

Projectors with a brightness of 2.000 lumens or more are suitable for rooms that cannot be completely darkened and have some ambient light. This higher brightness level ensures that images remain clear and sharp even in slightly lit home cinema rooms.

Daylight projection in the living room

Projectors with a brightness of 5.000 lumens or more deliver clear and vivid images even in well-lit rooms or in daylight conditions. This high brightness level is ideal for home cinemas with plenty of ambient light or large windows, where it is difficult to darken the room.

Projector technologies – clearly summarised

To ensure that the image on the projection screen later meets your exact expectations, three factors are particularly important: sharpness, brightness and projection technology.

  • DLP projectors offer higher contrast ratios and smooth motion, delivering impressive images with deep blacks and sharp details. This makes them ideal for films and gaming in a home cinema. Despite their lower light output, they provide an immersive visual experience in dark rooms.

  • LCD projectors are characterised by rich and vibrant colours as well as good brightness levels. Thanks to their high light output in ANSI lumens, LCD projectors are ideal for projections in brighter rooms.

  • LED projectors use light-emitting diodes to generate light. These projectors are known for their compact size, low heat output and energy-efficient operation. LED projectors offer a long service life and are low-maintenance, but do not achieve the same brightness as laser projectors.

  • Laser projectors use laser diodes as their light source. This technology is characterised by an exceptionally long service life and consistent brightness. Laser projectors also deliver an improved colour range and offer greater energy efficiency.

  • UHP lamps are the most widely used light source due to their ease of replacement and low initial cost. However, they have a limited lifespan of around 3,000 to 10,000 hours and lose brightness and colour intensity over time.

Smart features: Entertainment without the need for additional devices

The days when a projector absolutely had to have an external device such as a set-top box or streaming stick are over. Modern smart projectors come with the complete entertainment package built in and are as easy to use as a modern television:

Built-in apps

Thanks to systems such as Android TV, you have direct access to Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, Disney+ and YouTube via the projector’s menu.

Wireless streaming

With features such as Apple AirPlay or a built-in Chromecast, you can cast videos, photos or music from your smartphone or tablet onto the big projection screen with just one click.

Voice control

Many smart models can be conveniently controlled via the microphone in the remote control. Simply search for your favourite film using Google Assistant or Amazon Alexa.

Icon Anschlüsse & Kompatibilität

Bluetooth audio

Connect the projector to a Bluetooth soundbar without any cable clutter. Particularly handy: you can also pair wireless headphones if you want to watch an action film at night without waking the neighbours.

Projection distance: standard, short throw or ultra-short throw projectors

heimkino-leinwand

Standard projector

Long Throw
The classic choice for the typical home cinema.
These models usually require a distance of three to five metres from the wall to project a large 100-inch image. They are ideal for permanent ceiling mounting or a discreet position on a shelf against the back wall of the room.

Short throw projector

Short Throw
The practical solution for smaller rooms.
These projectors produce a large image from a distance of just one to two metres. They can be placed flexibly on the coffee table directly in front of the audience, without anyone walking through the beam of light when they stand up.

Ultra-short throw projectors

Ultra-short-throw
These projectors sit directly on the TV cabinet, just 15 to 30 cm from the wall, and project the image steeply upwards. This is the perfect and most elegant solution for all those who want a huge cinema-sized picture but don’t want any cables running across the living room ceiling.
