What exactly makes a Smart Home projector? Unlike conventional projectors, which only display the image, a Smart Home projector functions as an independent entertainment hub. It has an integrated operating system and WLAN functionality. For you, this means that no complicated cable runs and no additional streaming stick are necessary. The projector can stream content, run apps and is therefore immediately ready to transform your home into a flexible, smart cinema.

Smart projectors features: The difference to standard projectors

A classic projector only serves as an output device and must receive an image signal via external devices. A Smart Home projector, on the other hand, is an independent, networked multimedia centre. Thanks to integrated operating systems such as Android TV or similar platforms, you can directly access apps that you are familiar with from your Smart TV

Streaming services

You can use popular streaming services such as Netflix, Amazon Prime Video or Disney+ directly via the projector without having to connect an external player or streaming stick. This saves on cables and makes operation much more convenient

Conventional television reception is also possible via a Smart Home projector. Although most models do not have an integrated TV tuner, Smart functionality allows you to receive live TV offers via the apps of streaming providers or via a connected receiver

Voice control

Many Smart Home projectors are compatible with voice assistants such as Alexa or the Google Assistant, allowing you to control the projector by voice command. Your smartphone or tablet becomes an intuitive remote control with which you can transmit content wirelessly

The right image quality: resolution and brightness

In the living room, lighting is rarely completely controllable. Brightness and resolution are therefore crucial.

Brightness: As there is often residual light in the living room, your projector should have a higher lumen rating - ideally over 2,500 ANSI lumens. The brighter your room, the more lumens you need to get a high-contrast, clear image. For rooms that cannot be darkened at all, you should look specifically for a daylight projector to ensure a sharp and brilliant image even during the day.
Resolution: For a future-proof and detailed film experience, we recommend 4K UHD (Ultra HD) projectors. This resolution provides the necessary sharpness for large projection screens and is now standard in the Smart Home. White wall or projection screens?

Do I necessarily need a projection screen? Not necessarily, but: although projecting onto a white projection screen is flexible, a projection screen brings out the maximum in image quality, improves contrast and optimises colours. Find out more in our projection screen buying guide.

Projection ratio and placement

The projection ratio plays an important role when it comes to placement in the Smart Home

Standard projectors (long throw): Require a greater distance from the projection surface, which means mounting on the ceiling or far away in the room.
Ultra-short throw projectors (short throw): Stand directly in front of the wall or on a sideboard. These models offer the best integration into the living room, as cables are elegantly concealed and no light beam runs through the room
