Screen and beamer on a terrace
Solutions for private customers

Projecting in daylight on the terrace

You can also project outdoors in daylight. However, for this you need more than just a bright projector and a suitable screen. Correct positioning of these components is at least as important for a good projection. The projection path between the projector and the screen must be shielded from outside light.

Content

Equally important is the connectivity of the devices with each other. Both the projector and the Blu-Ray player or other playback device used, including the audio system, must be properly connected to each other. Depending on the model of the devices used, this can mean demanding installations.

Solutions for terraces

We offer the following solution variants for terraces of any size.

Acer Beamer H6815BD

Powerful projectors

  • high light output for bright ambient light
  • Projection surfaces up to 3 metres wide possible
  • powerful lens for close placement to the screen
Icon light bulb

Light output

5,000 lumens (minimum) for LCD projectors and 6,000 lumens (minimum) for DLP projectors for a screen width of approximately two metres in a conditionally dark pavilion or garage. For a better projection result, however, a higher light output is recommended.
Icon resolution

Image resolution

Full HD (1,920 x 1,080) in 16:9 format or XWUXGA (1,920 x 1,200) in 16:10 format. If the budget does not allow for these resolutions, a projector with WXGA resolution (1,280 x 800) is an alternative, but with limitations in image quality.

Assembly

If there is a solid ceiling, for example in a garage, ceiling mounting is recommended. Otherwise, the projector should be placed on a table in front of the screen.

Expert Tip:

Use a projector with wide-angle optics to get close to the screen. The projection path should not be exposed to sunshine or daylight. Installation projectors with optional wide-angle optics are an alternative for larger screen areas.

Screens for the perfect outdoor cinema

  • mobile screen for maximum flexibility
  • black back (absorbs light coming from behind)
  • an image width of up to 3 m can be realised

Screen size

When choosing the screen size, make sure that the screen still fits into the pavilion or garage. The height of the image should be based on the available height. Example: 200 x 125 cm. The height of the screen should not take up the entire height of the room. there should at least be a distance of 80 cm to the floor.

Screen type

Depending on where the screen is set up, you can choose between a tripod screen, a mobile screen or a folding frame screen, for example. Due to the small amount of space required, a mobile screen with gas struts is recommended for quick set-up.

Black back

The back of the screen should be black so that light coming from behind does not interfere with the projection. Otherwise, the screen must be additionally shielded from behind. Make sure that the screen is not exposed to direct sunlight.

Expert Tip:

When choosing a screen, make sure that it matches the format of the projector as closely as possible. For example, a full HD projector requires a 16:9 screen. If the format of the projector and the screen match, you can frame the image in the black masking of the screen.

Simple audio installation

  • the sound is derived from the source or the projector
  • Stereo sound is the optimal solution for such a project
  • Bluetooth as an optional transmission option if a wired solution is not possible
Icon loudspeaker

Output power

Depending on the size of the audience, the output power must be selected. A larger Bluetooth speaker is often sufficient to provide sound for the terrace without disturbing the neighbours. However, you are usually on the safe side with two 20-watt speakers.
Icon 3.5mm jack

Connection

How does the audio signal get from the source to the loudspeaker? Connection options via 3.5 mm jack or stereo cinch are mandatory. Depending on the loudspeaker or system, Toslink interfaces can be interesting

Icon Wireless

Wireless

If a wired audio solution is not an option, you may have the option of using a wireless connection such as Bluetooth. Pay attention to the synchronisation of the picture/sound signal. If this does not match, a wired transmission is the better solution.

Expert Tip:

Ideally, the selected projector has a 3.5 mm jack output. This allows you to send the audio signal directly to a loudspeaker located near the projector. This prevents additional cables from becoming a tripping hazard and the purchase of particularly long audio cables.
